Exfoliating Face Wash - Mx Cosmeceutical Skin Exfoliate

Exfoliating skin is a vital way to revitalise the look and feel of your skin.  As we grow older our rate of skin cell turnover dramatically slows with the result that dead cells tend to remain on the skins surface accentuating fine lines and a generally dull complexion.

The benefits of skin exfoliation

Exfoliating skin is a very important component of any skincare routine for both face and body. Exfoliation works to unclog pores, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, fade age spots and allow better absorption of serums, moisturisers and antioxidants from skincare treatments.

Skin exfoliation products can help with many skin problems and can also improve blood circulation to the skin’s surface, helping skin to look healthy and glowing. Regular exfoliation removes dead cells, helping the cell renewal process and improving the tone of the skin.

Specific benefits of Cosmeceutical Exfoliation

Dry Skin

Exfoliation helps enormously with dry or dehydrated skin, especially on scaly or flaky areas.  After exfoliation, it is strongly advised to apply a moisturiser to your skin as it will be perfectly prepped for maximum absorption.

Pigmentation

As the skin ages, pigmentation (dark areas on your skin) becomes increasingly common and more apparent as you grow older. The actives in a cosmeceutical exfoliant can help reduce pigmentation spots. Always follow with a moisturiser and always wear sunscreen.

Clogged Pores

For those who suffer from clogged pores, exfoliation helps to draw out black heads and white heads, which are commonly referred to as skin congestion.

Blemished Skin

For blemished skin the use of an exfoliator is strongly recommended.  Many people believe that the best plan of action for blemished skin is to strip the skin, which, while killing the bacteria, also dries out the skin and causes irritation, rather exfoliate your skin and then apply a moisturising lotion with clean hands to prevent spots or infections.

What Type of Exfoliant Should You Use?

There are two types of skin exfoliate chemical exfoliation, which uses acids or enzymes to remove dead skin cells, and physical exfoliation, which utilizes a hard substance to manually remove the dead skin cells.  For sensitive skin look for enzyme based facial products which are naturally sourced, from fruits for example – these work much like chemical exfoliation but are far gentler and safer to use on the skin.

How often should you use a facial exfoliation product?

It is always essential to maintain a good balance in any skincare regime. Not exfoliating leaves the skin tending to look dull whilst too much exfoliation can cause the skin to be stripped of its natural oils.  As a general rule exfoliating your skin should be done around twice a week.

Exfoliation after care

Below are some skin exfoliation after care tips.

  • Make sure to apply a moisturiser to hydrate your skin from the outside in. Mx Cosmeceutical Moisture + is ideal
  • After exfoliating make sure not to expose your skin to harmful UV rays for 24 hours.
  • Drink lots of water – this will help drain the toxins that were broke down from the skin exfoliation.

Lactic Acid as an Exfoliate

Mx Skincare Cosmeceutical Exfoliate + contains lactic acid, one of the most popular AHA’s in skincare today. Lactic Acid is part of a group of Alpha Hydroxy Acids [ AHA’s].  It is a non-friction type of exfoliant which works by breaking down and dissolving the structure of dead skin cells without causing sensitivity.   AHA’s such as Lactic Acid, are great for those who wish to rejuvenate their skin and to fight the signs of ageing. AHA’s can also be helpful for those who want to reduce the appearance of sun spots and hyperpigmentation.

When applied to the skin it stimulates the exfoliation of surface skin cells by dissolving the bonding between these cells. This causes the sloughing off of dull rough skin and promotes cellular renewal by increasing the cell turnover in the epidermis of the skin.  Lactic Acid increases the ceramides in the skin’s protective barrier. It also increases water retention, helps prevent congestion and improves hyperpigmentation. It also helps stimulate collagen, improves skin texture, softens the appearance of wrinkles and helps reduce hyperpigmentation.

One of the gentler acids, Lactic Acid should still only be used once to twice weekly. A key difference between lactic acid and other AHA’s, is its ability to boost skin’s moisture levels- even as it exfoliates it continues to attract moisture to the outer layers of the skin

Sun Protection

When using any AHA you should be aware that skin may be more vulnerable to the effects of UV Rays, therefore it is always important to protect skin from the sun. With very sensitive skin it may be best to patch test before using this product. Always protect skin from the sun with sunscreen and a wide brim hat.
